Aviation security, imaging and non-destructive testing (NDT)

Non invasive means of quickly scanning and assessing the security threat presented by people and goods coming across borders are becoming increasingly important. The science of imaging and visualisation, chemical identification and threat assessment are key capabilities encompassing imaging physics, image reconstruction, image processing, computer vision and graphics and modelling. Manchester is exceptionally strong across these areas and is developing applications in areas as diverse as materials design, industrial process control, transport, natural machine interfaces, drug identification and NDE. Complementary to these is a strong NDT capability to look at the structural integrity of metallic and polymer composite aerospace structures.
